Sonata for Guitar

I wrote another piece for guitar. I had wanted to experiment with some more “classical” forms, so I tried writing a sonata. When that turned out well, my composition teacher suggested I make it a multi-movement thing, so I did!

It’s in three movements:
I. Sonata
II. Slow
III. Rondo

And you can download it here (PDF).

Here are the Finale generated midi tracks of the piece.

Interesting piece. Can you expand on what you were thinking of when the movements were written, is there some sort of “aural picture” you had in mind during the process? If you had a subtitle, what would it be (e.g. Sonatina Meridional, Sonata Mexicana, Concierto de Aranjuez, etc).

    Hi David,

There’s not really any aural picture for this one. My Four Pieces for Guitar have a bit of a program (hence the spacey sounding character words for titles).

I just set out to write a Sonata. After the first movement, I knew I wanted a slow second and a fast third. The second movement came very intuitively, but the melody is adapted from a little piece I wrote for my Girlfriend. The final movement actually started out in 4/4 and I edited it to 7/8 because I liked the feel better. In all cases, the first melodies were just something that I came up with on the spot (just going for it) then working with them.
